The issues of news design - including vector illustrations, graphics and maps -come under scrutiny at the News Design Asia event in Kuala Lumpur next week.

Top designers and graphic experts from leading media organisations will share best practices and give practical insights during the WAN-Ifra conference from July 28-30.

Among speakers are Sara Quinn - a professor at Kansas State University and affiliate faculty member for The Poynter Institute - and Matt Martel, executive editor for photography and presentation at Fairfax Media's metro dailies, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne) and the Australian Financial Review.

From Indonesia comes Rio Waas, head of the artistic department at Media Indonesia in Jakarta handling the daily newspaper's print and digital design as well as books and magazines, corporate brand design and creative ads for the newspaper.

Two speakers from Singapore are Simon Scarr - deputy head of graphics for Thomson-Reuters - and Warren Fernandez, editor of the Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings'

flagship publication.

Fernandez will discuss the ST's much anticipated relaunch on all its print and digital platforms, showing how the latest trends in newspaper design can be adapted to a quality Asian audience across all platforms.
