A trial upgrade of a Goss static belt RTP at a plant in Houston has won Electronic Design Group an order to give the same treatment to the remaining 15.

The benchmark first upgrade at the Houston Chronicle last March - to address registration issues - brought a significant waste reduction after three weeks, leading to the order to address their primary leads on each press.

Director of print operations Jim Jones says waste savings alone, as well as the resulting impact on operational uptime, justified the overhaul.

EDG's modernisation of the RTPs includes splice and tension control systems, as well as replacing a number of obsolete components. The system detects faulty conditions and warns the user to prevent these from causing downtime, making running the web off the core a thing of the past.
