Time to go sailing as Guaneria merges Aldus with Tronics

It's nothing to do with the Chicago publisher or Paul Brainerd's pioneering desktop programme, but Aldus-Tronics is an opportunity for Ian Guaneria to do more sailing.

At 67, the founder of web engineering company Aldus Engineering is retiring after 45 years in the industry and a merger with Frank Floriano's label and inkjet coding machinery vendor Tronics.

Aldus-Tronics will be launched at the Auspack trade show in March, but the two have already started rearranging things. Tronics is moving from Silverwater in Sydney into Aldus' West Ryde facility, while Melbourne operations in Broadmeadows (Tronics) and Scoresby (Aldus) will stay for the time being, and it is understood no major staff changes are planned. Tronics also has operations in Malaysia and the US.

Guanaria says he plans to spend more time working with his son and "a little bit more time sailing".

Aldus Engineering was established in 1949 as a maker of flexo presses and slitters, but has evolved into a distributor of equipment including Mark Andy presses and Tidland shafts. It remains a specialist supplier for some papermaking equipment.

Long-time ANZ Videojet distributor Tronics has a broad offering which includes a system to place 'post-it' notes on newspapers.
