The success of a UK newspaper group’s trial of a paywall-based e-edition may provide the encouragement needed for other puiblishers to charge for content.
The Tindle Newspaper Group is using PageSuite page-turning software, starting with its 14,000-circulation ‘Tavistock Times’ and 40,000-circulation ‘South London Press’ and will roll out the system to 40 other paid papers. The Guardian Media’ website reported the Tavistock title now has 300-400 subscribers (at 50p, about $1), while those for its South London stablemate (paying 55p to read the paper) are in the “high hundreds”.
The system provides a replica of the printed paper on its website.
