As if newspaper publishers don't have enough problems, some US states are looking at making publishers responsible for recycling.
In New York, state senate bill 1185A - which moves the cost of disposal from municipalities to manufacturers - has growing support, according to Newspapers & Technology.
The trade publication quotes the Long Island Advance and Packaging World that responsibility for end-of-product-life recycling would fall on producers - in this case, newspaper printers - while other states are looking at different forms of extended producer responsibility.
The New York legislation covers product packaging, plastic wrappers and bottles and paper products such as brochures, newspapers and magazines.
