Berlin daily Neues Deutschland has expanded its open-source WordPress editorial system with the addition of two interface modules and an epaper solution.

Working with developer ppi Media, the newspaper – which brands itself as nd – has  created  a fully-fledged editorial system using the company’s tohoop solution.

Now published by a cooperative of employees and readers, the daily has avoided monolithic editorial solutions by using open-source components such as WordPress as part of its editorial workflows. The modular approach fits with ppi Media’s philosophy, and now enables WordPress toInDesign integration, together with a planning interface and e-paper solution.

The introduction of tohoop creates connection between WordPress CMS, the publisher’s databases and Adobe InDesign to deliver reliable print integration.

The tohoop link – which has earned ppi a place in WordPress VIP’s technology partnership programme – allows content to be exchanged between online and print media, translating WCMS formatting into Adobe InDesign. A web-based planning interface allows content to be placed in InDesign in the browser, without copy and paste or a local InDesign client.

InDesign templates can be accessed during content preparation in WCMS, and the content created in the online editor used in print.

The changes also facilitate the newspaper’s ongoing move to digital -first publishing.

Head of publishing Rouzbeh Taheri says they had looked for a solution that would allow them to create and store online and print content in one single system while expanding creative options for the print edition with InDesign.

“We’ve found a partner who shares our vision and provides us with targeted publishing components to make our dream a reality”, he said.

2021 and 2022 have been eventful years for nd: After moving production from Neues Deutschland Druckerei und Verlag to nd Genossenschaft, there have been additional challenges brought about by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. “We’re delighted that ppi Media and property company Franz-Mehring-Platz 1 have stood by our side throughout the process to ensure a smooth and successful transition.”
