A ‘pack’ of newspapers somewhere between a single copy and commitment to a full subscription could be the ideal offer to get readers back into the habit.

Marketing teams at Spain’s Diari Ara thought so, and have made a winner of the concept.

Last week, head of product & growth Anna Cuyàs Diari collected a product innovation award at WAN-Ifra’s World Printers Summit in Vienna for the concept, which offers subscription ‘packs’ of five to 30 issues. With payments made upfront, the streamlined process simplifies purchasing while creating a seamless reader experience across multiple channels. Cuyàs joined Diari ARA in 2020 from Euranka, where she was digital acquisition lead. In Vienna, the innovative ‘omnichannel strategy’ was lauded for its customer-centric approach.

Winners in three sustainability and print innovation categories were announced at the summit in Vienna.

A new award for the ‘young leader of the year’ was presented to Rodi Group managing director Dick Ranzijn, recognised for his “dynamic leadership and forward-thinking approach within the print industry”.

Netherlands-based Rodi Group publishes 28 local door-to-door newspapers, and operates a printing house and a distribution company. Ranzijn is active in the Koenig & Bauer User Group and a board member of the Dutch Print Employers' Association, exemplifying “the next generation of industry leaders.

“His commitment to innovation and competitiveness continues to push the boundaries of the print industry,” said World Printers Forum director Ingi Rafn Olafsson.

The prize for ‘going green’ – a company’s path to sustainability – went to Germany’s Funke Mediengruppe and Axel Springer Print Service.

Funke was recognised for thoroughly evaluating the carbon footprint of its flagship print product, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung(WAZ). By analysing the entire value chain – from recycled paper to delivery – Funke had integrated key learnings into its procurement processes, achieving lasting emission reductions and setting new standards for sustainable media production.

Meanwhile, Axel Springer’s printing plants had focused on innovative and state-of-the-art management systems to constantly reduce their CO2 footprint and use an internal ‘carbon bank’ at group level to manage compensation for the remaining emissions.

“Both companies exemplify leadership in the move toward environmentally sustainable printing practices,” Olafsson said.

The awards came during the annual World Printers Summit, a forum for industry leaders to exchange ideas, celebrate achievements and explore new strategies for growth and sustainability.
