Whether or not the iPad is the saviour the newspaper industry, newspapers from all over the region want to know how to exploit the new tablet's potential. A workshop at PublishAsia in Kuala Lumpur could hold the key.

Digital media expert Matthias Kretschmer will showcase news media apps from around the world, explain the specific features of the Apple iPad and highlight what kind of contents are suitable for the device.

"Gaining new readers on this exciting platform, without cannibalizing the print, and making profits out of it is not as easy as sliding a finger on a touchscreen," says Joanne Tan of organisers WAN-Ifra.

The session will also explain the technical requirements and practical workflow for creating an app. It will also review the various business models that media organisations can opt for when entering the tablet business.

Other learning workshops cover:

- How to implement a newsroom 3.0;

- Crossmedia advertising;

- Cost Control in newspaper production.
