Netherlands daily Haarlems Dagblad – believed to be the oldest newspaper in the world – has launched a Sunday tablet edition using Twipe technology.

Editor in chief Gerben van’t Hek says the aim was to “do something special” for the first Kings Day in the Netherlands: “We wanted to give everyone a present the day after this big party,” he says.

Subscribers were informed by mail, push message or website, leading to more than 6000 downloads.

Haarlems Dagblad first appeared in 1656 as the Weeckelycke Courante van Europa (right), changing its name in 1664 to De Oprechte Haerlemse Courant. During the German occupation in World War II, it was forced to merge with Haarlems Dagblad.
