Technology from Zencoder including ‘instant play’ video comes to Brightcove with the acquisition of the cloud-based encoding service.
Zencoder is also the creator of open source HTML5 player Video.js and Live Cloud Transcoding.
Under the agreement, the entire Zencoder team joins Brightcove, including co-founders Jon Dahl, Steve Heffernan, and Brandon Arbini.
Brightcove Asia-Pacific & Japan senior vice president Dennis Rose says Zencoder and Video.js – used on “tens of thousands of websites” – will continue to be offered as distinct, standalone offerings alongside other Brightcove cloud content services such as Video Cloud and App Cloud.
It will also incorporate key Zencoder technologies into future versions of those products. “Over time, the ingestion and transcoding system within Video Cloud will include advanced features, additional control and premium performance provided by Zencoder,” he says.
Both Zencoder and Video.js have new features and offerings being developed, and Brightcove says it will invest to bring forward their release.
The Zencoder office in the San Francisco SoMa area will become the Brightcove Bay Area R&D centre, joining the Boston and Seattle centres as hubs for development of Brightcove products and services.
