Having upgraded systems to increase multimedia options, a Colombian publishing group has found one of the outcomes is easier print production.

Regional title Vanguardia Liberal – part of the Galvis Ramírez group – installed ProtecMedia’s Milenium following a search for a modern convergent newsroom which would enable it to face the current challenges in the sector.

But technical director René Di Marco says benefits have been more widespread: “It has proved a very useful tool in the production area of the newspaper, greatly improving and facilitating the production of all printed products.”

Beyond production, handling of advertisements has become easier, including automatic placement of pages. “Last-minute changes can easily be made to the production area, such as using other press settings or a different printing press,” he says.

Tangible benefits include reduced production time, with the time spent in editorial production reduced by “at least an hour” and errors in production area – particularly on the flatplan – reduced.

The changeover at Vanguardia Liberal took less than a week, with all of those working on the newspaper “adapting very well and able to start getting the most out of it”.
