New Indonesian daily the ‘Jakarta Globe’ is building a following with a 40,000 circulation claimed to be larger than that of the long-established ‘Jakarta Post’.
Built from scratch in 11 months, the new English-language newspaper first appeared last November, and uses WoodWing Software’s Enterprise 6 system implemented locally by partner Serious Technology.
Chief editorial adviser A. Lin Neumann says the paper quickly assembled a team of seasoned international and local journalists, built a newsroom from the ground up and hammered together an editorial and business strategy: “We had to make many important decisions in a very short time,” he says.
Newsroom technology was high on their list, calling for a system which was “cost effective but flexible” and able to handle all current and future needs. Serious’s John Fong had been involved in the launch of business daily ‘Kontan’ in Jakarta, and says the company implemented the editorial and asset management system on site at the ‘Globe’.
“It was an honour to accompany a second new Indonesian daily to its first issue – challenging, but well worth it,” he says.
Currently, full-colour 48-page editions offer readers a distinctive three-section publication from Monday to Saturday, with the tagline ‘Great Stories, Global News’ stressing the the reading experience.
"Readers should feel little difference between reading an AFP or New York Times wire story and our locally written stories,” Neumann says. “We aim to provide quality to our readers.”
