EidosMedia has scored a key Asian foothold with an order to install its multichannel Méthode editorial system at the South China Morning Post.
The 112-year-old English-language newspaper holds a commanding position in Hong Kong and increasingly, the world through websites and apps which have a growing audience in China.
In addition to Méthode's core editorial and workflow functions, the SCMP will also adopt the latest release of Méthode's social media tools.
Apart from Mint - the financial daily published by New Delhi-based HT Media under a content agreement with Méthode user the Wall Street Journal, which has a Singapore edition - and the English-language China Daily, it will be the first Méthode installation in Asia.
Both print and digital content for the award-winning daily will be integrated using the EidosMedia platform as part of plans to speed transformation in the digital era. SCMP has daily print, online, tablet and mobile apps and e-paper editions, some of which are accessible through a metered paywall.
Managing editor Brian Rhoads says news operations are evolving rapidly: "By integrating Méthode with our operations, SCMP will be well positioned to converge all of our units on to a single platform and create synergies across news desk, layout, photo and production units.
"We look forward to Méthode unlocking opportunities that can further advance our position as a highly sought-after news source as well as providing a firm basis for developing our digital portfolio going forward."
In addition to core editorial and workflow functions, social media tools will allow journalists to "power search" social media from within the editorial workspace and post their work to the main social networks - including integrated Weibo and WeChat - in standard format. Response and reaction to the publication's posts to social media are also monitored in real time using a social media dashboard. Additionally, EidosMedia says the systems will provide video and rich media synergies, full language support for traditional and simplified Chinese and a platform that will serve bureaux across Greater China as well as about 300 staff in the HK newsroom.
EidosMedia Asia-Pacific general manager Lodovico de Briganti says the SCMP has a rich multimedia news operation: "Méthode will make its news-creation processes more efficient and give it hands-on control of reader traffic and engagement in the social space."
