Funding from Google and Facebook is expected to underwrite a new group of digital publishers in Australia.

The Digital Publishers Alliance claims the support of more than a score of publishers including Junkee Media – from which cofounder Tim Duggan (pictured) will be chairman – Mamamia, Private Media, Solstice Media and Schwartz.

Others include Agenda Media, Broadsheet Media, Concrete Playground, Future Women, LADbible Group, Man of Many, Pinstripe Media, Squiz Media, The Brag Media, Time Out, Urban List and We Are Explorers.

The group says funding will come from “multiple sources” including annual membership fees and support from the Google News Initiative, with the Facebook Journalism Project “currently finalising” its funding.

The mastheads represented account for annual revenue of A$150 million, according to an in-house survey, with members employing more than 1500 people in full-time or contractor roles.
