Media professionals in under-represented or disadvantaged groups get a leg up with this week’s INMA Elevate scholarships.

For the third year, the group has chosen 50 early or mid-career professionals, giving them a package of benefits which includes professional development opportunities through INMA and the Google News Initiative.

Among them are applicants from Australia, India, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Senior editor Dawn McMullan says the programme aims to strengthen the news business by equipping new faces and voices with strong media industry fundamentals, as well as networking and mentoring opportunities.

Scholarship recipients from 31 countries were selected from a record-breaking 432 applications. They come from historically under-represented and disadvantaged groups including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, access to higher education, immigration and disabilities.

INMA executive director and chief executive Earl Wilkinson says their inclusion is critical for innovation and the future of news media. “INMA is proud to partner with, and be at the front of, news industry efforts in diversity and inclusion.”
