New Zealand’s Pride In Print Awards brought success for the country’s newspaper and heatset printers, with APN Print scoring a category win, four further gold medals and a haul of ‘highly commendeds’. Presentations were made at Auckland’s Sky City in a gala event attended by 700 guests. APN’s Manukau heatset site won the publications category for an edition of ‘Mindfood’ which judges said had shown “what it takes to jump off the news stand and into the hands of the magazine reader”. The entry – which also won the web process award – stood out because of its high degree of difficulty. “This magazine had a 50,000 print run on an 18-year-old press and had a four-day turnaround, said judges. “The quality is extremely high with excellent colour and register. It also has a double gatefold cover for further impact. “To achieve this kind of consistency on a press running at ten metres a second is a huge feat for the web sector.” APN Print chief operating officer Brian Hood says the awards cemented the position of the company across a number of print processes. “Maintaining and building on our success and reputation of being the ‘quality’ NZ web printers in both heatset and coldset is challenging, particularly given the economics of our industry and the country,” he says.
