Some 330,000 tonnes of newsprint paper capacity has been cut with the closure of UPM’s Hürth mill, the maker saying a reduction of 280,000 tonnes of uncoated fine paper capacity is to follow.

The company announced plans to close Hürth (Germany) mill in May, together with a machine at Nordland Papier in Dörpen.

Negotiations with employee representatives have been concluded, with 338 positions affected. The Hürth mill closed at the end of last month, and production is to cease in Dörpen by the end of the year.

UPM Communication Papers operations SVP Antti Hermonen said there had been a constructive dialogue with the workers council to develop responsible solutions for employees. “The thoughtful and collaborative approach taken by all parties during the consultations resulted in socially responsible solutions for our people,” he said.

The estimated financial impact of the closures remains “materially unchanged” from the announcement in May.
