European digital newspaper printer the Miller Group is expanding its Greek operation as demand for “right-sized” print runs grows.
Acropolis Printers Hellas has installed a second Screen Truepress Jet 520NX, improving reliability, quality and allowing them to explore new market opportunities.
The facility adds to product security, offers variable content, and adds the option of painless expansion into books and magazines.
The expansion at Acropolis – currently producing 60 local and 30 foreign titles in Athens – follows “outstanding” experience with the Screen inkjet technology at Malta and Athens. “The Jet 520NXs have proven themselves exceptionally reliable, while marking a notable jump in quality and speed over our older printing presses,” Miller group logistics chief for press and print operations Mark Miller said.
“That made reinvesting in two units an easy decision.”
The Greek newspaper industry’s demand for reliable logistics and the ability to print on-demand newspapers quickly, is a year-round, seven days a week affair, with flights and ferries needing to be carefully coordinated for distribution to the many islands.
The Jet 520NX runs at up to 180 metres/minute, using pigment ink technology suited to stocks down to 42-45gsm. A user-friendly interface allows multiple jobs to be managed with adjustments to colour optical density tailored to client preferences. The second press went into Miller’s Athens site over the holiday period, readying them for increased production demands.
During installation, Miller says engineers helped optimise colour management, improving print quality and efficiency across both production lines.
Acropolis is now exploring new market opportunities enabled by the press’s expanded capacity and reliability, including books-on-demand, university publications, pharmaceutical materials and government communications.
