When it’s 'exhilarating' for newspaper press maker Goss, that’s a good year

Exhilarating is hardly a word you’d expect a newspaper press maker to be using at the moment, but that’s exactly how Goss International director of marketing services Eric Bell describes the year since last IfraExpo.

“What a difference a year makes,” he says, “and certainly an exhilarating one for Goss.”

He points to a number of significant technology advances since the Vienna event in October 2011, as well as business developments which “will keep us fit and strong for the evolving market”.

The company will reprise its DRUPA invitation to ‘see things differently’, emphasising how this corporate philosophy can provide new solutions for greater productivity and opportunity.

Bell says Goss is riding high on recent sales successes and positive market response to its newest press models, and “reasserting its leadership position” in the newspaper sector.

Current installation projects range from the world’s first Colorliner CPS double-width compact press to a succession of latest-generation Community presses across Africa and the Middle-East.

The first of the compact Colorliner CPS, launched at last year’s IfraExpo, is underway at DC Thomson in Dundee, Scotland. Its focus includes higher quality print, low manning levels and reduced carbon footprint. Units have a conventional non-split design, but a new cylinder and ink train configuration allows the shortest possible nip-to-nip distance and a web lead of only 2.7 metres between the first and fourth level This reduces web fan-out and increases registration accuracy.

Air ducts flow air for optimum heat dissipation, contributing to low heat generation. Goss says this and substantial reductions in power and energy costs, as well as low waste between jobs, contributes to lowering the overall carbon footprint and cost of ownership.

Goss will also feature its Lifetime Support offering at the Frankfurt show. Recent projects include Star Publications (Malaysia), DC Thomson, MNA (UK) and Newsday (USA).

At Star Malaysia, Goss is upgrading three 2002 Colorliner presses, with new controls and drives, using software developed for the latest Colorliner and FPS models.
