Australian book printer Griffin Press will lease an HP inkjet web and two other digital presses in a seven-year deal reported to be worth $22 million.

The PMP subsidiary is reported to be migrating to fully-0digital production with the installation of the PageWide T410 web press, Indigo 10000 B2 and 7800 sheetfed presses, together with a Scodix digital embellisher and Kolbus folding and perfect binding line.

Griffin will be the first in the country to embellish covers using the Scodix Ultra Pro system.

Chief executive Peter George says the lease and service agreements will assist the South Australian printer in retaining customers and winning new contracts: "Our printing offer to the publishing industry will include in line digital multicolour cover printing along with full digital embellishment solutions to best meet publisher's short run print demand."

HP will lease the equipment, provide consumables and "be responsible for productivity" from the new platform, on a basis PMP told the ASX will be "initially cost neutral".

Installation at the Adelaide site will take place over the next two or three months with commissioning by July. George says operational cost savings of about $1 million are expected as further conventional processes are converted to digital."
