Goss further into packaging with flexibles acquisition

Goss is expanding further into packaging with the acquisition of a web-offset system for flexibles and a partnership with Netherland-based DG Press.

As part of the strategic deal, newspaper and web press maker Goss International takes over the Thallo press system for flexibles - including shrink-sleeve and in-mould film - and preprint liner, introduced by the company last year.

DG press will continue to make the Thallo press platform and sell and service it in Europe, with Goss targetting customers in the Americas, Africa and Asia Pacific through its global sales, service and distribution network.

A hybrid web-offset system specifically designed for high quality flexible packaging, the Thallo will make its DRUPA debut this month.

Goss Europe managing director Bert Schoonderbeek describes it as an innovative, cost effective solution for flexible packaging production: "As such, this product fits perfectly within the Goss packaging portfolio and expands Goss's overall packaging offering which includes the VPak line of press systems."

He says DG Press's technical and market knowledge makes them the ideal partner to continue to drive the adoption of web offset technology in the packaging sector. Both companies will work together on joint development activities which will benefit both the Thallo and Vpak models.

Advantages of offset over flexo and gravure include lower cost plates, fast makereadies, the absence of solvents, and high quality printing on a diverse range of substrates. Thallo adds the latest motion controls, easy-to-use operator interfaces and a simple, cost-effective sleeve system.

Co-owners and directors of DG Press - which also owns the Drent Goebbels IP, building the Vision and Gazelle presses - are Remko Koolbergen and Peter Kloppers. "The partnership strongly improves our international exposure and gives Goss and DG Press a strengthened market position, taking us to the next stage of commercialisation of the Thallo worldwide," says Kloppers.
