Washington-headquartered single-width press manufacturer Web Press Corporation has filed for Chapter 11 protection under the US bankruptcy code. The company makes the Web Leader press range and is best known for its QuadStack compact four-colour tower, frequently installed as an add-on to presses such as the Goss Community.
According to reports, the company decided in May to seek protection, and filed on July 27. Its assets and liabilities are both between US$1-10 million, with its 20 largest unsecured claims – amounting to more than US$1.5 million – including ancillary equipment manufacturer Jardia Industries.
Web Press has tried for more than a decade for a foothold in the Australia/NZ market through a succession of agents (through sales arm Web Leader) including Aim Group, Cyber and lately Charlie Skandrett’s Brisbane-based Pressnet but has failed to get an installation.
The news will be a major blow for Skandrett, who signed the agency agreement after a meeting at DRUPA last year and promised the US maker a first installation within a year and with several proposals out, had hopes of a press running before the next SWUG conference.
At the time (September 2008) Web Leader president Mark Rocca said sales of the Quad-Stack had been phenomenal in the USA, the UK, and South America: "We now have press lines containing Quad-Stack and UPM units in Asia and Africa as well.”
