Buffett site reinvesting in press systems

A second Buffalo News project for the QIPC-EAE partnership will see colour controls added to the New York publisher's Lake Erie plant.

The site produces two morning dailies and three Sunday editions along with the Hamburg Sun and six weekly Penny Savers. In addition, it prints for several publishers including the New York Times, Batavia Daily News and regional weeklies. The company is owned by Berkshire Hathaway whose chairman is Warren Buffett.

Production vice-president Bryan Carr says the publisher is reinvesting in its press systems, some of which were installed in 2004: "Intensive use and OEM obsolescence decisions have rendered the systems outdated, so a change is essential."

Carr says the choice of QIPC's colour technology is "not least because we are already using the EAE operating system".

He says integration ease is "key to success" and replacing the current register system will bring many other benefits.

A total of 13 IDS-3D cameras will be installed on the press, with Carr counting on excellent print registration quality and anticipating that the overall amount of printing waste will also reduce. "QIPC's system allows us to do this without passing on the costs to the user," he says.
