A mug’s game: Designers lose in Adobe’s Pantone spat

Preloaded Pantone libraries are set to disappear from Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite following what is being billed as a spat over licence fees.

Users of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Color and Adobe Capture have been advised that the Pantone colour libraries in their products will disappear from software updates from next March.

While the impact for newsmedia industry users – who mostly work in CMYK or RGB – is likely to be insignificant, the move is a further step away from the commitment to print on which Adobe was founded.

Adobe says the preloaded libraries “will be removed from future software updates” in March next year. They say an “alternative solution” is being worked on to minimise impacts of the change.

While there are workarounds for those who need them, they fall in the same “subscribe or go without” bracket which has seen Creative Suite users choose between paying a monthly fee or making do with owned copies of the software now approaching ten years older, together with system software able to run them.
