Harness racing, dinner, letterpress printing… three elements for a great night out are planned for a special Lithographic Institute event.

LIA NSW has set October 20 as the date of the evening event in which Penrith Museum of Printing president Bob Lockley and members will demonstrate printing skills of centuries past.

The museum – and the harness racing track – are under threat because of a plan to redevelop the Penrith Panthers rugby ground on the site, with a new home still sought.

With the support of other members Lockley, who was previously production and logistics managing director of Fairfax Media, will show guests how type was set and newspapers printed in the letterpress era. The Museum’s collection includes historic Linotype typecasting equipment and an old Wharfedale printing press, the suggestion being that guests may be able to have their names set in “hot-metal” and printed.

The demonstration will will be followed by a two-course dinner and a night of harness racing. Lockley (pictured at Fairfax North Richomond) will also update guests on the future of the museum.
