An AI ‘design sprint’ could prove a powerful tool for media companies to leverage the benefits of artificial intelligence, NZZ AI and data strategy lead Lukas Görög says.

In an INMA big date’ blog, he advocates the four-step structured workshop to help news organisations quickly develop concrete use cases.

Görög, who works for Swiss publisher Neue Zürcher Zeitung, says by fostering intensive collaboration and following a structured approach, organisations can develop innovative, customised solutions that are strategically aligned with their long-term goals.

“In the fast-paced world of media and publishing, leveraging innovative technologies is crucial to staying competitive. While AI offers immense possibilities, many companies struggle with identifying the right use cases and implementing them effectively.

“Media houses understand AI is important and here to stay, but deploying it and pinpointing the most important applications can be tricky.”

This is where an AI design sprint, an intensive workshop designed to assist companies in identifying and developing AI use cases, can help decision-makers, developing a concrete use case within three days.

Among many benefits are rapid problem solving through its focused approach, customised collaboration, and the opportunity to foster innovation and creativity.

“The workshop creates an environment that stimulates innovation and creativity,” he says. “Participants are encouraged to develop new ideas and explore unconventional approaches, leading to innovative solutions.”

Workshop content is also tailored to the company’s specific needs. By defining specific requirements and collaborating with partners, the developed AI solutions are ensured to be technically feasible and aligned with business goals.

An AI design sprint is comprised of four systematic steps that lead to developing a successful AI use case. These are ideation/opportunity mapping; framing/validation, assessment, and requirements definition.

Generated ideas are structured and assessed for feasibility and value. An assessment matrix, evaluation of data sources, and resources – along with an AI business model canvas – are used to further refine the ideas. Specific requirements for the selected use case are defined, including technical and partner requirements, collaboration and technical fit.

“An AI design sprint offers media and publishing companies the opportunity to achieve tangible results quickly and strategically plan long-term projects,” says Görög. “Through the structured approach and tailored workshop content, companies can ensure the developed AI solutions are not only innovative but also sustainable and aligned with their specific needs.

For success, it is essential to involve key stakeholders from various departments, including newsroom, IT, AI and data team, as well as C-level executives.

“The AI design sprint is a powerful tool for media and publishing companies to effectively leverage AI’s benefits,” he says. “By fostering intensive collaboration and following a structured approach, organisations can develop innovative, customised solutions that are strategically aligned with their long-term goals.”
